Are Toxins Affecting Your Weight?

Forbes Magazine has stated that one third of all Americans are now affected by obesity. Those who suffer from the issue of being overweight do so for an obvious reason: They consume more calories through the foods they eat than they burn. One not so obvious reason that may be contributing to the increasing weight of Americans is toxicity in the body. Practitioner Dr. Steven Arculeo, DC says, “Most people do not realize that removing accumulated toxins is a big part of a weight loss program. Losing weight will be difficult, if not impossible, without removing them”.

Toxins exist all around us; in our environment (UV exposure, radiation, pollution), in our households (cleaning products, mold), in our foods (pesticides, heavy metals, high fructose corn syrup) and even in our behaviors (stressful lifestyles, drinking alcohol, smoking). When the body accumulates these toxins, our natural defenses; the liver, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract, go to work filtering the toxins out of your body. However, when your natural defense systems are overloaded, your body uses fat as a protection source which stores toxins so they do not damage your tissues and organs. Therefore, if you have an abundance of toxins in your body, and are trying to lose weight, your body will fight to hold onto the fat for protection, making it difficult to shed the pounds.

What can you do about it? Before you begin any type of weight loss program, detoxify your body. By ridding yourself of the toxins that may be built up in your fat stores, you will allow your body to remove excess fat faster. If you do manage to lose weight, but continue being toxic post-weight loss, your body will gain weight faster in order to build up its fat stores to once again protect your tissues from toxins.

Therefore, prior to any weight loss program or after you have lost a significant amount of weight, stay away from the most common toxic behaviors such as leading a stressful lifestyle, consuming unhealthy foods and beverages, smoking, drinking alcohol, lack of exercise and taking medications. There are also some highly effective detoxification tools available in today’s market:

Whole Body Vibration: Promotes weight loss and detoxification of the body among other things, through a lot impact, vertical vibration massage;
Infrared Sauna: Uses far infrared light to your core body temperature resulting in a deep, detoxifying sweat while promoting relaxation, increasing your metabolic rate and cleansing the body;
Ionic Foot Bath: Produces positive and negative ions that echo through the body to remove toxins and rebalance cellular energy.
Not only does detoxification of the body promote weight loss, it can play a significant role in your long term health and quality of live. Toxins may be the cause of some of the most common health problems we see today: chronic illness, premature aging, headaches, indigestion, acid reflux, mood swings, yeast infections, fatigue and much more. So, to reach your health and wellness goals remember to eat a healthy diet, exercise on a regular basis and keep your body toxin free!

Vibrate Your Way to Better Health

I just wrote my first article for o2 Wellness and whole body vibration. It is all about whole body vibration can reduce pain, whether it's chronic pain, acute pain, back pain or any other kind of pain. We can help you get instantaneous pain relief!

Check it out:

Whole body vibration, or WBV, involves standing on a platform which sends mild or intense vibrations through the feet, and therefore, into the rest of the body. For something that is so simple in nature, the benefits are astounding.

Since getting its start during the 1960’s space race when the cosmonauts used it to build lean muscle mass and increase circulation, WBV has become much more. It has since been adopted among athletes for increased athletic performance, physical therapists for speedier recovery from surgery and injury for patients, among gynecologists to aid in the battle against osteoporosis and to increase bone density, among chiropractors to reduce inflammation and for pre and post adjustment treatment, as well as the general public for treatment of chronic pain, aiding in better sleep, increasing energy, and bettering their quality of life and overall health.

How does it work? WBV targets the body’s natural healing response by increasing cellular oxygen intake, stimulating cellular fluid movement, and facilitating cellular waste removal. As a result, new cells are created which are more resilient and vibrant, and function together more cohesively as a healthier, younger body.

Who should use WBV? In essence, everyone! WBV exposes you to the same types of benefits as 30-45 minutes of conventional exercise, plus some. With the fast paced lives we live every day, exercise is sometimes low on the totem pole of priorities, despite its importance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. WBV vibration not only gives you these benefits, but has been shown to aid in weight loss, help with sleeping disorders, increase energy and improve the outlook on life of those who utilize vibration therapy on a regular basis.

WBV is especially good for those suffering from chronic pain due to injury, trauma, age, arthritis, fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis. Because your pain can cause mobility issues and therefore limit your fitness regime, this is an excellent alternative which can help to reduce inflammation and pain while giving you exercise benefits without the stress to your ligaments, joints, tendons, etc.

Why try Whole Body Vibration? Read this list of benefits and then ask yourself, why not?

Improves blood and lymphatic circulation
Increases bone density
Aids in weight loss
Tones muscles, tightens skin, and reduces cellulite
Speeds recovery from surgery and trauma
Relieves chronic pain

Expect to see 65 million more obese adults in U.S. by 2030, researchers say. By Robert Preidt, HealthDay News

Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) — The number of obese people in the United States will increase from 99 million in 2008 to 164 million by 2030, and the number of obese people in the United Kingdom will increase from 15 million to 26 million, a new study predicts.

Obesity-related diseases and health care costs will soar as a result, according to the report published Aug. 26 in The Lancet.

Already, the U.S. and U.K. obesity rates are the highest among the 34 member nations of the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation (OECD), the study said.

The U.S. obesity rate will rise from 32 percent to about 50 percent for men, and from 35 percent to between 45 percent and 52 percent for women. The U.K. obesity rate will rise from 26 percent to between 41 percent and 48 percent for men, and from 26 percent to between 35 percent and 43 percent for women.

The report, based on analyses of U.S. data from 1988 to 2008 and U.K. data from 1993 to 2008, is the second article in the journal's obesity series.

In the United States, the cost of treating obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, would increase $66 billion per year by 2030, and represent a 2.6 percent increase in overall health spending.

Spending on obesity problems alone will increase 13 percent to 16 percent per year if U.S. trends continue. About 4 percent of that increase is attributable to an aging population, the study said.

In the U.K., the increase would be £2 billion per year ($3.2 billion), with overall health-care spending rising 2 percent. Spending specifically on obesity disorders will jump 25 percent per year over the next 20 years, with 10 percent of that increase due to population aging, the researchers said.

In the United States, the increasing rates of obesity would mean 7.8 million extra cases of diabetes, 6.8 million extra cases of coronary heart disease and stroke, and 539,000 extra cancer cases by 2030. The U.K. would see 668,000 extra cases of diabetes, 461,000 extra cases of coronary heart disease and 130,000 extra cases of cancer.

Losing just a little weight could offset those increases. The report noted that a 1 percent population-wide decrease in body-mass index (just 1.9 pounds for an average 198-pound adult) would prevent more than 2 million cases of diabetes, roughly 1.5 million cases of heart disease and stroke, and 73,000 to 127,000 cancer cases in the United States.

That same amount of weight loss in the U.K. would cut between 179,000 and 202,000 diabetes cases, 120,000 cases of heart disease and stroke, and 32,000 cancer cases.

Obesity prevalence varied by gender and ethnicity, the study said. In the United States, about one-quarter of all men were obese in 2008 regardless of their race, while 46 percent of black women, one-third of Hispanic women, and 30 percent of white women were obese. In the U.K., 19 percent of white men, 17 percent of black men, and 11 percent of Asian men are obese, along with one-third of black women, 20 percent of white women, and 16 percent of Asian women.

Want Fat Loss?

Lipo Light - when I saw the banners and posters for this machine at the Las Vegas Tradeshow we attended back in June, I thought...What is this? A light that reduces excess fat? Being the skeptic that I am, of course thought, "Yeah right!"

However, after talking to one of the head people at Lipo Light, I learned all about how LED light therapy can penetrate into the lower levels of your fatty tissues and re-shape your fat cells. It is pretty incredible stuff. Needless to say, we had to try it for ourselves, so we made the investment and brought Lipo Light into the o2 Wellness Center.

Since then, I have personally lost over 2 inches in my stubborn belly fat area. 2 inches! That's an entire belt notch in 3 sessions! All I had to do was lay down and let the fat reducing system go to work. This isn't weight loss surgery, this is using LED Light Therapy for fat loss and removing excess fat. The technology is astounding!

After my intial treatments, we started introducing the fat reducing system to our clients, and WOW! We are seeing astounding results. Whether they are targeting arm, back, bra area or belly fat, we are seeing RESULTS in all of our clients!

Want to learn more about removing stubborn belly fat or experiencing fat loss in other areas? Call o2 Wellness today at 949-240-6713 or book your appointment online at www.o2-wellness.com!

Whole Body Vibration and Your Muscles and Bones

We found this article posted by Dr Mercola and we had to share. Too many times doctors shy away from integrative services in health and wellness (i.e. whole body vibration), so whenever we see someone integrating wellness and preventative care into their lives and the lives on their patients, we love to share.

Whole Body Vibration Does Your Bones and Muscles Good
Posted By Dr. Mercola

Standing on a vibrating platform can be beneficial for muscles and bones, particularly in older or sedentary adults.

Whole body vibration, or WBV, involves standing on a platform that sends mild vibratory impulses through the feet and into the rest of the body. It is claimed that the vibrations activate muscle fibers more efficiently than the conscious contraction of muscles during regular exercise.
Some studies have found that WBV increases bone density in the hip, and inhibit bone loss in the spine and hip areas.

Current Sports Medicine Reports May-June 2008; 7(3):152-7

Exercise is clearly an underappreciated tool to treat disease. Many, including most physicians, fail to use it to achieve high-level wellness. Fortunately I am not one of them as I have been passionate about exercise for four decades. I have been exercising since 1968 and have been very healthy most of my life. I attribute much of my success in life to being in excellent physical shape.

In fact, I had a business need that required me to obtain some additional life insurance and was able to get the highest rating possible, one that is typically reserved for twenty year old athletes and rarely given to anyone over 50. I also had to perform a stress test for this exam. Before I got on the machine I asked what the record was at this facility, and they said that in over ten years the best anyone could do was 14 minutes.

I took that as a personal challenge and promptly proceeded to break their record and went 15 minutes. That is all the software program could do, it simply could not go any further. I am confident I could have gone another five minutes and was actually disappointed as I had planned on using that activity as a workout. Instead I had to go home and do a more intense workout.

It was also interesting that the treadmill facility questioned me about five times to make sure I was not taking any prescription medication. Seems that, in their experience, it is highly unusual for anyone over 50 to not be on multiple drugs.

Is a Vibration Platform Right for You?

The vibration platforms originate from research conducted during the 1960s space race. They work on the principle that if muscles are exercised while being shaken, they activate neighboring muscle fibers, hence building mass faster.
I first encountered this whole body vibration (WBV) technology in 2006, at which time I contacted one of the top personal trainers in the Chicago area, Tony Bruno -- an expert on muscle activation techniques – for his input on this approach.
Tony felt the technology was great and had been proven to improve proprioception, strength and balance, and decrease sway in the elderly, and found it especially beneficial in rehab to increase circulation.

A vibration platform has also been proven useful for athletes, improving speed and vertical jump height, and cutting your warm-up time by half. However, he indicated that because the platform does cause a temporary decrease in joint stability, you shouldn’t use it before an event, as you’ll need to be in top form. But it would be an excellent addition to the training phase of your program.

WBV training has also been shown to improve and maintain bone mineral density in postmenopausal women and the tactic is being studied for its therapeutic potential, such as increasing older women's bone mass – a far better alternative than the dangerous osteoporosis drugs currently on the market, for sure.

However, the authors of the study above warn that if you have certain health conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, you may want to avoid WBV until safety concerns have been addressed more fully.

Remarkable Benefits for the Elderly

WBV training has demonstrated significant gains in most measures of muscle performance in sedentary and elderly individuals.
But one study, performed by the University of Liege in Belgium, investigated the effects of controlled whole body vibrations exercises on overall health in elderly patients and found that after 6 weeks (performing 4 one-minute sessions, 3 times a week), the participants experienced:
• 143 percent improvement in physical function
• 77 percent improvement in equilibrium
• 60 percent improvement in vitality
• 57 percent improvement in the quality of walking
• 41 percent reduction in pain
• 23 percent improvement in general health
Not bad for 12 minutes a week!

How Does Whole Body Vibration Training Benefit Your Body?

As Dr. Keith DeOrio, M.D. explains in another article, your entire body musculature, as well as your internal organs and glands, are affected by WBV stimulation.

Your muscle spindles fire secondary to the mechanical stimulation produced by the vibrating plate, and this rapid firing of the muscle spindle causes a neuromuscular response that leads to physiological changes in your brain as well as your entire body.

Traumas and injuries can leave cellular memories in your brain or body tissue that impede normal body movement or function, even after they’re healed. Using WBV stimulation allows your body and brain to rapidly de-imprint these old cell traumas, re-imprinting with positive, healthy information. This allows for better and more efficient rehabilitation of injuries from sports or surgery than traditional methods of therapy.

According to Dr. DeOrio, studies have shown that a mere 12 minutes of training on a WBV plate is equal to a 1.5-hour workout with weights. And since it’s accomplished with little amount of stress to your joints, tendons and ligaments, it can be a very good therapy regimen if you’ve suffered injuries, if you’re elderly, or have disease conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or multiple sclerosis, which would normally limit your fitness program.

The benefits of whole body vibration training include:
Increased muscle strength – (especially explosive strength)
Increased hormone secretion: IGF-1, testosterone, and HGH (human growth hormone)
Enhanced bone and muscle building
Increased lymphatic drainage
Increased flexibility and mobility
Cellulite reduction
Increased circulation
Decreased Cortisol levels
Pain reduction
Increased secretion of serotonin and norepinephrine.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins courtesy of o2 Wellness Center

o2 Wellness Center received this article from one of our o2 Vibers and with the different integrative services we have such as whole body vibration, ionic foot detox bath, far infrared sauna and Kangen Alkaline Water, we felt it ties well into our belief: Prevention before medication. We hope you enjoy this article.

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY ('TRY', BEING THE KEY WORD) TO ELIMINATE CANCER, JOHNS HOPKINS IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY.

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins :

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer
cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have
multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients
that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after
treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the
cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable
size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a
person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer
cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and
forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing
diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day and
by including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing
cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells
in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can
cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars
and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of
chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor
destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from
chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either
compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb
to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to
mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy.
Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other
sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer
cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made
with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute
would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small
amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in
color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

B. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the
gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting
off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer
cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based
diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat,
like chicken. Meat also contains livestock
antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all
harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole
grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into
an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked
food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live
enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to
cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance
growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most
vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw
vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)..

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high
caffeine Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer
fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or
filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap
water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the
intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic
buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By
refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes
to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the
body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system
(IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals,
EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy
cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known
to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior
be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put
the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to
have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy
life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated
environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to
get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen
therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer
cells.

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave..

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

HCG Diet & Rapid Weight Loss

I had heard of HCG before. My Aunt lost 25 pounds, o2 Wellness centers nutritonial cell analyst lost 20 pounds, and a good friend of mine lost 10 pounds on the HCG diet. So, I decided to give it a go, and in 10 days, I lost 13 pounds. I am THRILLED!

At first, the thought of only eating 500 calories a day scared me. I didn't think I could do it. However, while taking the drops, it's amazing how easy it is. Your cravings are diminished and you don't feel hungry.

I thought I would share an easy to understand explanation of what HCG is and how it works in case anyone out there is looking for an easy way to lose weight and keep it off.

What is HCG?

HCG is defined as Human Chronic Gonadotropin which is natural accruing protein hormone that develops in the placenta during the first trimester of pregnancy shortly after conception.
This protein hormone is recognized as a peptide. Peptides are a class of hormone that is secreted into the blood stream and aide in endocrine functions in living animals.

HCG – The Weight Loss Cure?

HCG is being called the weight loss cure because it essentially tells your body to feed off of your abnormal fatty areas instead off feeding off of the food you eat and/or your body’s muscle.
It is believed that when your body experiences a reduced calorie diet, HCG resets the hypothalamus by sending signals which tell your body to utilize body fat as a primary source of energy and to conserve and maintain lean body mass (muscle mass), resulting in rapid weight and inch loss (An average of 20-30 pounds per month).

It really works! Give us a call to start losing weight and feeling great today!

Scientic Explanation of EWOT - Oxygen used with Vibration Machine

When we first started using the term "EWOT" in our center, I had a hard time keeping a straight face. Say it out loud, "EWOT." Kind of brings a smile to your face, doesn't it? However, as I learned more and more about EWOT, or Exercise with Oxygen Therapy, I realized it is no laughing matter.

The benefits of exercise with oxygen therapy are scientifically proven, and are incredibly beneficial. As most of our o2 Vibers know, whole body vibration gives the same types of benefits as a 30-45 minute exercise session. Therefore, combining oxygen therapy with a vibration machine gives you the same benefits as a 30-45 minute traditional EWOT session, in just 10 minutes.

The scientific explanation of EWOT is very complex; however, we found a simple and effective explanation of how and why this works on www.greenvillehealth.com:

Exercise with Oxygen Therapy

Basically, the body’s ability to transfer oxygen from the lungs to the cells is perhaps the most significant factor in whether you live a healthy life or not. This transfer mechanism becomes damaged with age, and then susceptibility to illness increases. However, EWOT aids the body in repairing this vital mechanism.

The scientific aspect of EWOT is a little complex, but here is a basic explanation. Oxygen comprises 20% of the atmosphere. Atmospheric pressure is 760 mm and thus the partial pressure of oxygen entering the body’s lungs is about 150 mm. However, oxygen in the lungs is diluted considerably with carbon dioxide. As the environment becomes increasingly polluted, the oxygen we intake is more and more diluted by carbon dioxide leaving the body and in the atmosphere. After oxygen is diluted, its pressure is reduced to 100-110 mm. This pressure drives the oxygen from the lungs into the blood and via the arteries to the capillaries in the extremities of the body. The capillaries then release some of the oxygen to support individual cells.

Ideally, the pressure of the oxygen in the arteries will almost equal the pressure in the lungs. However, aging causes the arterial pressure to decrease to approximately 70 mm as opposed to 95 mm.

In order for the oxygen to reach the cells from the capillaries, it must dissolve into the water of the body. Unlike carbon dioxide, though, oxygen does not dissolve easily into liquid. The significance is this: Oxygen’s solubility is heavily dependent on the pressure driving it.

Dr. Rowen of Second Opinion explains Oxygen is extracted in the capillaries and when the blood comes out the venous end of he capillary, the average pressure of oxygen in the veins is about 40 mm early in life and drops to 35 mm by age 70. The difference in the pressure of oxygen between the arterial and venous sides reflects how well the oxygen is delivered and consumed.

In your 30s, the amount of oxygen released to the cells is significantly higher than in your 70s: a 30 year-old will release 55 mm (95-40) while a 70 year-old will release 35 mm (70-35). That’s a huge drop in the amount of pressure of oxygen your cells receive.

The problem is that when you age, the oxygen pressure falls. Thus, while the volume of oxygen may stay the same and it may appear you are getting enough, your may be oxygen deficient because there isn’t enough pressure to make use of the volume of oxygen.

The breakthrough of EWOT is that it raises the arterial pressure to youthful levels; it only involves breathing high levels of oxygen while exercising. Exercise increases the circulation, creating a greater pressure to drive oxygen into the capillaries. The increase in pressure facilitates the repair of the transfer mechanism. EWOT is effective for every conceivable condition because it improves the delivery of the most essential substance in tissue life and repair.

Sunshine, Tanning Beds, or Spray Tans?

Everyone knows that sun exposure, in moderation, is a good thing. Engaging in outdoor activities: gardening, surfing, walking, etc. helps you to remain physically active. Most people feel an immediate boost of energy and vibrancy after stepping outside. Being outdoors & in the sunshine also kicks off the metabolic and chemical reaction that produces Vitamin D.

However, like anything done in excess, the damaging effects of both tanning in the sunlight and/or tanning beds can have both cosmetic and physically damaging effects. I.E. Skin Cancer, early aging, wrinkles, etc. However, modern day America is willing to risk these damaging effects in pursuit of the perfect tan. A golden tan has almost become a fashion accessory "must have" in recent years. Fortunately, there are alternatives to baking in the sun and/or tanning beds: spray on tans.

Spray tans do not use harmful radiation waves to give the skin a golden glow, it uses Dihydroxyacetone or DHA, a chemical approved by the FDA in the 1970's which does not damage the skin, and is considered a safe skin coloring agent and nutritional supplement. It has no known toxicity and allergic reactions are very rare.

How does it work? DHA penetrates only the 1st layer of skin "dead skin cells" and reacts with amino acids to create a tan color on these cells. Certain brands, such as Fake Bake, also include Vitamin D in their ingredients to enhance the benefits of the spray.

If you would like to try a spray tan at home, we recommend Fake Bake. The owners of o2 Wellness use this product and it leaves your skin a smooth, streak free golden brown. To learn more, please contact us today: 949-240-6713.

Vibration Excersize - Is it a Scam?

Whether it be about the infrared sauna, the ionic foot detox, or vibration excersize with oxygen therapy (EWOT), San Clemente based o2 Wellness loves to hear feedback from our clients.

Recently, one of our regulars shared she had been researching on Google (we were thrilled to hear this as we love when our clients educate themselves on the benefits above and beyond what we tell them) and was excited to find nothing but positive feedback in regards to Whole Body Vibration and whether or not it was effective. We decided to do some of our own research and found an article on ww.hobby.vocably.com which we thought presented the information in a simple but effective way:

One of the newer products on the market is vibration exercise equipment. Claiming to help do everything from toning muscles to improving strength and bone density, some people are turning to this controversial equipment to reach their workout goals.

The theory behind vibration exercise equipment was actually generated for the Russian space program. With zero gravity, there is no resistance to work your muscles, and with prolonged stay in space can lead to muscle deterioration and even loss in bone density. To fight this, the Russians came up with vibration exercise.

The theory is simple. The person using the equipment merely gets onto a platform. They can stand, sit, lay down, or even focus the platform on certain body parts. This platform creates a vibration, which is sent through the body. In reflex the muscles contract. This causes tendons to stretch, and increases blood flow and improving blood oxygenation. This strengthens and tones them without effort on the person’s part. Since the vibrations get sent through the entire body, all the muscle groups are affected. Ultimately, the makers of the equipment claim that it will help increase range of motion, coordination, posture, bone density, and even decreases cortisol, the stress hormone. It is said to be relaxing, which lowers stress and can even eliminate tension related pain. They also claim that anyone can use the equipment – whether they are young or old, skinny or overweight, a seasoned athlete or beginning exerciser.

The efficacy of the equipment seems to be proven in the space program itself. With using the equipment, the Russian space team was able to spend a record of 420 days in space. In comparison, the Americans, who trained with traditional workout equipment, have only stayed 120 days because their bones and muscles started to give out.

Research now is turning to study the use of vibration exercise in medicine and rehabilitation programs. It is being used to help accident victims and coma patients regain use of their muscles with some success.

The makers of vibration equipment claim that the equipment stands up to the highest possible safety standards. The machine itself seems to be user-friendly – they take up little space and do not require much maintenance. They are reputed to be so easy to use that you do not even need to change your clothes. However, if your goal is to lose weight, you may wonder whether or not the equipment will work with you.

One thing to keep in mind is that astronauts, and the sports teams endorsing vibration exercise equipment, are already in a pretty healthy state. They watch what they are eating and are active. It is kind of hard to binge on potato chips and ice cream when you are thousands of miles away from the closest convenience store. To get the most out of any workout, including that with vibration equipment, to get the best results you will want to make lifestyle changes as well. This includes everything from eating a healthy diet to taking vitamins, to spending fewer hours in front of the TV. Before starting any new exercise program, you should always speak with your doctor. This is especially true if you have experienced illness or injury, or if you are elderly or severely overweight.

There are some specific instances where vibration technology should not be considered an option. These include, but are not limited to, pregnancy, advanced heart disease, if you have a pacemaker, if you have just had surgery, if you have hip or knee implants, severe diabetes, epilepsy, severe migraines, or recently placed IUD’s, pins, or plates. Once again, always check with your doctor before using this equipment

Breast Thermography: The Mammography Alternative?

Breast Thermography: The Mammography Alternative?

By Moshe Dekel, MD

If you ask ten women, or men, if they are familiar with Breast Thermography, nine would say no. This is a surprising fact, since medical thermography has been in use since the early 1970’s, and the modality was approved by the FDA in 1982 for breast cancer detection and risk assessment as an adjunct to mammography.

The reason why so few people know about Breast Thermography is because the medical establishment, the American Cancer Society and most women’s organizations are still very comfortable recommending mammography. The difference between the two modalities is profound. Mammography, like MRI and sonography, is an anatomical study; it looks at anatomical changes of the breast.

It may take up to ten years for the tumor to grow to a sufficient size to be detectable by either a mammogram or a physical examination. By that time, the tumor has achieved more than 25 doublings of the malignant cell colony and may have already metastasized.

Thermography is a physiological study. The infrared camera detects the heat (infrared radiation), which is emitted by the breast without physical contact with it (no compression) and without sending any signal (no radiation). This is a receiving mode only. It shows small, unilateral temperature increases, which are caused by an increased blood supply to cancer cells. Cancer cells have an ability to create new blood vessels to the effected area (neoangiogenesis) in order to satisfy the increased demand for nutrients resulting from the higher rate of growth and metabolic demands of the new colony. It was found that even a few thousand cancer cells (early stage of the disease) secrete Nitric Oxide, a powerful vasodilator, in order to achieve the same results (increase bloodflow).

Physiological changes can precede anatomical mammographic detection by seven to ten years, therefore allowing us to react early in a preventative mode that may stop the development of overt cancer. The study is interpreted with the help of computer analysis of the 75,000 temperature pixels displayed in each of the 18 digital images that are taken in every study. The study can be interpreted as normal, low, moderate or higher risk.

A holistic protocol is then implemented in order to prevent the formation of overt cancer. One of the major limitations of mammography is its inability to diagnose cancer in the case of dense breast tissue. I am sure that some readers will identify with the inconclusive reading of their mammography and their “invitation” to take another one in six months. The patient may or may not know that the density of the breast will not change in that period of time.

For more than three decades, the medical establishment, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the media have promoted mammography as the main screening procedure for breast cancer. The current recommendation is to have a base line mammogram at the age of forty and for women with family history of breast cancer to start as early as age thirty.

In September 2000, a large, long-term Canadian study found that an annual mammogram was no more effective in preventing deaths from breast cancer that periodic physical examinations for women in their 50’s. Half of the almost 40,000 women ages 50 to 59 received periodic breast examinations alone and half received breast examinations plus mammograms. All learned to examine their own breasts as well. By 1993, 13 years after the study began; there were 610 cases of invasive breast cancer and 105 deaths in the women who received only breast examinations, compared with 622 invasive breast cancers and 107 deaths in those who received breast examinations and mammograms.

Alternative Medicine has maintained for years that mammograms do far more harm than good. Their ionizing radiation mutates cells, and the mechanical pressure on the breast can spread cells that are already malignant (as can biopsies). In 1995, the British medical journal, The Lancet, reported that since mammographic screening was introduced in the 1970’s, the incidence of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which represents 12% of all breast cancer cases, had increased by 328% and that 200% of this increase was due to the use of mammography.

Since the inception of widespread mammographic screening, the increase for DCIS in women under the age of 40 has risen over 3000%. Eighty percent of the 1.4 million breast biopsies performed each year in the US, because of a suspicious mammography, are negative. Why, then, does mainstream medicine keep recommending mammograms? A $100 mammogram for all 62 million U.S. women over 40, and a $1,000+ biopsy for 1- to 2-million women, is an $8 billion per year industry.

Mammography cannot detect a tumor until after it has been growing for years and reaches a certain size. Thermography can detect increased risk of breast cancer much earlier, because it can image the early stages of increased blood supply to cancer cells, which is a necessary step before they can grow into a detectable size tumor. Another reason for increased thermographic temperature is the rapid cell division, which is apart of cancer growth.

Breast Thermography is not promoted here as a replacement for mammography, but rather to inform women about their options regarding the prevention of breast cancer.

Dr. Oz raves about Far Infrared Sauna

The next life extension tool that Dr. Oz wheels onto Oprah's stage can help you burn 700 calories…without lifting a finger.

Dr. Oz says his in-laws introduced him to the infrared sauna, which is slightly different than a normal sauna. "It makes the same rays that come from the sun and filters out the UV radiation, so it only gives you the infrared radiation," he says. "That radiation that's infrared goes a little bit into your skin so, without heating you up and the external environment too much, it heats the body up."

After a few minutes in the sauna, Oprah says she's starting to feel the heat. Dr. Oz says the high temperature helps lower blood pressure and increase blood circulation. "It gets your heart to beat faster, and it burns calories," Dr. Oz says. "It raises your metabolism a little bit, and also when you sweat, you sweat out toxins through the skin."
